Choosing Positivity: Protecting the Joy of Dance for Our Kids

Somewhere in the middle of the busy season, it’s easy to forget what we’re really doing here—until you look at a photo and see the smiles that say it all. Those grins, the giggles, the quiet moments of confidence… that’s the heartbeat of dance, and it’s the heartbeat of our community.

Dance has never been “just dance.” It’s not a marketing scheme. Dance teaches children real skills that help them succeed in life: how to form healthy relationships, how to recognize when something isn’t healthy, how to work with others when it’s hard, and how to keep going when things feel uncomfortable. Dance is connection. It’s learning to be human.

A Message to Dance Families (From a Studio Owner)
As a studio owner, I want to share something from the heart—because I believe we have an incredible opportunity in front of us.
We get to build a strong, supportive dance community here. We get to create a culture where kids feel safe, encouraged, and proud of themselves. And the beautiful part is: we can do that together.
I’m also aware that the dance world can sometimes feel loud—especially online—and it’s easy for comparisons, misunderstandings, or frustration to take up more space than they deserve. This isn’t about calling anyone out. It’s simply a reminder of what we want to stand for:
- We don’t have to cut each other down to build something great.
- Different studios can have different niches.
- Multiple studios can be successful.
- Families can find the right fit without making someone else “wrong.”

The Example Our Kids Are Learning From
Our kids are always listening. They’re not just learning choreography—they’re learning how to talk about other people, how to handle disappointment, and how to respond when something doesn’t go their way.
That’s why I believe the most powerful thing we can do as adults is choose the tone we bring into the spaces our kids love. When we model respect, accountability, and kindness, our kids learn to do the same.
And when we model encouragement—for our own dancer and for others—we teach them that someone else’s success isn’t a threat. It’s proof that growth is possible.
Accountability Is the Real Growth Mindset
Here’s the truth: we can’t control what other people say or do—but we can control our own actions.
We can take accountability for:
- Our own mindset
- Our own health
- Our own progress
- Our own words
- Our own example
Because our kids become what they repeatedly experience. Read that again. Our kids become what they repeatedly experience. Their internal voice matches their external environment. When they’re surrounded by positive, steady, respectful language, they learn to think that way too. And if we’ve ever caught ourselves slipping into comparison or negativity, that’s not a reason for guilt—it’s an invitation to break the cycle and choose better.

There Is Room for Everyone
Finding your community matters.
There are so many incredible studios and studio owners in our area—people who started this because they love kids and they care deeply. If one place wasn’t the right fit for your dancer, that doesn’t mean it was a bad studio. It simply means your dancer is still finding their place.
We aren’t meant to take the same paths in life—so why do we compare ourselves like we’re running to the same finish line?
The reality is: we’re not the same, and that’s the beauty of humanity. We need each person’s uniqueness to balance us, to teach us, and to help us become better.
And in a world that already has enough darkness, we have to protect the places that are meant to be joyful.
Keep the Joyful Places Sacred
Dance should be one of those sacred places.
A place where kids can:
- Feel proud of their effort
- Learn to be brave
- Build friendships
- Practice resilience
- Celebrate someone else’s win without shrinking their own
So here’s my gentle reminder—adult to adult:
- Choose positivity.
- Speak with kindness.
- If you’re frustrated, process it privately—then model a healthy way forward.
- Keep dance a place where kids feel light, safe, and proud.
What We Believe at Dance Inclusion
At Dance Inclusion, we’re passionate about building a place where every dancer is seen, supported, and celebrated.
We will always choose community over competition.
If you come with an open heart, an open mind, and a commitment to positive behaviors, you belong here. And we’ll protect the culture we’re building—which means we’ll have the hard conversations when we need to, and we’ll keep returning to what matters most: the joy of dance.
Because the truth is: our teachers get a front row seat to the joy of dance in every classroom. We never want negativity to take the joy from these moments that will be remembered forever. Dance is a gift of joy that we need because when life is hard, we need these moments to remind us that joy exists and there will always be joy in the places we love. We never want to miss the smiling faces right in front of us. 💕
